Marie Curie's groundbreaking achievements in the early 20th century not only revolutionized physics but also paved the way for countless women in science.
Today, her pioneering spirit resonates throughout West Los Angeles, where women are making significant strides in STEM fields.
At UCLA, women-led research teams are at the forefront of advancements in quantum science, medical imaging, and sustainable chemistry.
In March 2025, the university celebrated its 20th anniversary of the Broad Stem Cell Research Center by hosting the inaugural Women in Stem Cell Science Symposium.
This event highlighted the contributions of female scientists and underscored the importance of diversity in scientific research.
Beyond the university, local organizations are actively engaging young women in STEM.
The Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA) hosted its annual Young Women’s Career Conference in March 2024, connecting students with female leaders across various STEM industries.
Similarly, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County held its Girls in STEM Days, offering interactive activities and career exploration opportunities for girls aged 8-18.

Furthermore, the USC Sea Grant received the Champion of Girls Award in October 2024 for its partnership with the EmpowHer Social Justice STEAM Camp.
This program provides BIPOC girls in Los Angeles County with opportunities to explore STEAM fields, emphasizing environmental justice and marine science.
These efforts reflect a collective commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in STEM.
